Learning about bees in KS1

Yesterday, Mrs Zorab brought her bees into Years 1 and 2. The children learnt about pollination and the different roles different bees have. They enjoyed getting to see the bees for themselves, including the queen bee!

Teamwork Bees in Year 2

This afternoon, Year 2 had a tricky challenge: to label and position all 7 continents and all 5 oceans correctly. They worked like Teamwork Bees to ensure that everyone in each group was contributing and no-one was taking over and doing all the work! I was really impressed with the way they spoke and worked with one another 🐝 🐝 🐝

Deaf awareness workshop

This afternoon Year 1 were lucky enough to have a zoom workshop to help us understand more about what it is like to be deaf.

We learnt 4 ways to get someone's attention if they are deaf or hard of hearing.

We learnt some sign language.

And we even learnt how someone, like Luke who delivered the workshop, knows when to wake up in the morning if he can't hear an alarm.

Land Ahoy!!

Today Year 1 climbed aboard our pirate ship and set sail on the seven seas! Someone shouted ‘land ahoy’ and we all pictured what we could see, hear, smell, touch and how we felt.

Once we reached land, we had to follow Polly’s instructions to find the hidden treasure. Polly could only tell us to go forwards, backwards, left or right!

Come back later in the term to see how we have used our experience this afternoon to help us with our writing.

Symbols of Pentecost

Today Year 1 made kites and decorated them with different symbols of Pentecost. We then took our kites into the playground to watch them move in the wind.

As well as learning about Pentecost we also talked about our ELLI skills because a lot of resilience and team work was needed when assembling the kites!

Mayan Maths

Year 5 have been looking at the Mayan number system and undertook some Mayan maths as part of our Mexcellent project.  The Mayan mathematics system was way ahead of its time.  They used a symbol for zero, a dot to represent one and a bar to represent 5.

Year 2’s Ice Challenge

This week Year 2 kicked off the ‘ice’ part of their Fire and Ice topic with a challenge. They had to melt one ice cube as fast as possible and keep the other frozen as long as possible.

They learnt that using their own bodies to heat the ice cubes was the fastest method, but also that using salt can accelerate the melting process (we didn’t go into why at this stage).

The group that kept their ice cube from melting for the longest had loosely wrapped it in some cloth and put it into a cup. This worked better than blowing on the ice cube which lots of groups tried.

Great learning Year 2 😊

Clifton Diocese Schools Project

St Joseph's School has joined the Clifton Diocese Schools Project.

As part of the Clifton Diocese Schools Project, we will work alongside the International Tree Foundation and the Masaka and District Land Care Chapter, to provide independent water resources for 23 schools in the Masaka District of South-Western Uganda.

Over the next couple of years, the school will be undertaking fundraising activities to support this project. We will also find out more about life in Uganda and the Masaka District.
