St Joe’s Virtual Advent Calendar - Catholic Social Teaching

For this year's St Joe's Virtual Advent Calendar our focus is on Catholic Social Teaching.

Each school day during Advent we will post pictures or videos displaying an aspect of Catholic Social Teaching. They will be displayed alongside a bible verse. The bible verses were selected by our Chaplaincy Team.

You will be able to see this virtual Advent Calendar on Class Dojo & here on our school blog.

Advent Prayer Bags

During Advent, children will have the opportunity to take home an Advent prayer bag.

Below is a video from members of our Chaplaincy Team last year, demonstrating what to do with the Advent prayer bags.

Nelson Mandela

Year 5 have studied the life and artwork of Nelson Mandela. As well as being a great leader and president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela was a talented artist. Much of his artwork was during his 27 years in prison on Robben Island. Mandela was arrested for his fight against apartheid.

Below are some studies we made of Mandela's artwork.

We looked at the famous hand print of Nelson Mandela. Few have left such an imprint on the international stage as Nelson Mandela. It is therefore fitting that the extraordinary imprint of his right hand should so closely resemble the shape of the continent of Africa.

Looking at wars since World War 2

For international Peace Day, Year 5 have been looking at the location of wars since WW2. We quickly realised there were so many wars it would take too long to locate them all.

Peace day - refugees

For Peace Day, Year 5 have been studying refugees. We built refugee tents to highlight the number of refugees fleeing war and persecution. Refugees are forced to leave their homes behind and travel to a new country, often to set up home at a refugee camp with tents.

Maths frog investigation

Year 5 have recently been undertaking lots of maths investigations. This one involves two families of frogs who wish to swap sides to the other side of the pond.

  • There are 7 lily pads which the frogs must use to cross the pond.
  • Frogs can only jump to empty lily pads.
  • Frogs can only jump over one other frog at a time.
  • Frogs don't know how to jump backwards!
Many of the children were able to find the answer to the investigation. However it became a lot harder to record how they achieved it and demonstrate their answer to someone else.
